Problem

In the year 2020, the pandemic made the country operate differently, consequently, the tribal population of Madhya Pradesh had to face hardship as the tribal artisans were out of work. While the world got accustomed to the Work from Home culture, the Tribal communities living in remote areas found it difficult to get access to the internet and join the portal as a seller or instructor. There was a need for the promotion of tribal arts and artisans, for the purpose of global outreach. The department of Tribal Affairs was required to take initiatives to create a platform for the tribal community.

Solution

The Tribal Affairs Department has created a platform to make the tribal art and culture of Madhya Pradesh proud and protected. The special portal is equipped with online books, tribal art and handicrafts, and digital training. Aadirang has started online training in traditional Tribal art of Madhya Pradesh like Gond and Bhil Pithora. The certification of the training programs is in process of approval from the government, Vanya has collaborated with the Jagran Lakecity University of Bhopal.

In order to bring out talented artisans from remote districts, Aadirang is collaborating with NGOs working in the tribal sector, also teams are being sent for identifying hidden talents amongst the tribal population. Aadirang is also working for international collaboration for sending indigenous artisans on exchange programs. Along with online classes, Aadirang is an e-commerce platform for tribal art, handicraft, and tribal literature. Also, 15 new community and digital radio stations are being established with a head station in Bhopal. Through these stations, Aadirang will prepare educational, infotainment programs in tribal dialects.

Outcomes

The portal improved the livelihood of the tribal community by providing a platform to promote and sell their art, handicrafts, and painting during the pandemic. As the world took on virtual learning more people joined in for online training, through this portal many artists were employed as instructors. Authentic tribal paintings and training became available at the artist’s rate with no commission or profiteering at the website’s level. Through the online radio stations, the organization has been successful in preserving the tribal dialects and benefiting from global outreach. The initiative has increased the demand and availability of tribal art; the general public can now have original artwork in their homes and offices instead of mass printed products.
