Established by the Gujarat State Tribal Education Society, Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Jhagadiya, Bharuch, Gujarat, is dedicated to providing quality education for the holistic development of tribal children. The school is part of the Digital Equalisation (DE) Programme, an initiative implemented across 283 schools in 30 districts of Gujarat to enhance learning outcomes in subjects like science, mathematics, and geography.

Holistic Development Focus

The school places a strong emphasis on children adapting to the routine of schooling for cognitive and affective development. This involves understanding how home and school factors impact the adaptation process, examined through longitudinal data on cognitive performance.

Sports and Talent Events

An annual sporting event in November is a highlight, where every class is required to participate and attend. From simple acts like aerobics for junior classes to pyramids and long jumps for senior classes, the school aims to build physical endurance and determination. Parents and the community are invited to witness these events, fostering a sense of community participation.

Marathons, walkathons and the “ring of fire” are additional activities providing students with opportunities to showcase their talents. These events are crucial as many students, belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), had limited access to education initially. Encouraging team spirit and enthusiasm for classes has been a significant achievement.

Technological Integration and Innovations

Equipped with modern technologies like a biometric attendance system, a computer lab with 24×7 internet facilities, a library, and a science lab, the school seamlessly integrates technology, teaching, learning, and sports. This integration has led to improved attendance and academic results. While the school has a sanctioned strength of 480 students, the current enrollment is less than half, showing improvement over the last year.

To make learning enjoyable and cultivate scientific fervor, the school utilises Do it Yourself (DIY) kits supplied by ThinkLab (IIT-Mumbai). These kits enhance the understanding and grasping power of the students.

Clubs and Educational Tours

Various clubs, including the Science Club, IT Club, Drama Club, Photography Club, Nature Club, and Social Work Club, have been formed to nurture the hidden talents of tribal children. Periodic educational tours are organised to keep them engaged and provide them with diverse learning experiences.

Eklavya Model Residential School in Jhagadiya stands as a beacon of inclusive education, promoting holistic development and empowering tribal children with skills and knowledge for a brighter future. Under the guidance of Principal Falgunaben Kacharabhai Tadvi, the school is making remarkable strides in providing a nurturing and enriching educational environment.
